Two Years with BADHAN, BUET Zone: 1,279 Bags of Hope, Leadership, and Unspoken Realities

A reflection on two years serving as Treasurer and Executive Member of BADHAN, BUET Zone: mobilizing 1,279 bags of blood, raising BDT 300k in relief funds, managing emergency blood logistics, and passing the torch.

BADHAN (বাঁধন) is a voluntary blood donors' organization driven by a clear mission: to turn voluntary blood donation into a nationwide social movement. Founded on university campuses across Bangladesh, BADHAN inspires young students to donate selflessly, building a reliable, non-commercial safety net for thousands of patients trapped in acute healthcare emergencies.

From the earliest days of my campus life at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), I felt drawn to this community. Watching seniors and batchmates wake up at 3:00 AM to arrange blood for a stranger undergoing critical surgery left an indelible mark on me. In July 2023, I officially joined BADHAN’s BUET chapter (an extension of the founding parent organization), initially stepping in as a volunteer.

What began as answering donation hotline calls and helping set up donor desks quickly evolved into deeper operational commitments. Later in July 2023, I was recruited into the Executive Committee, and with the trust of our members, was subsequently entrusted with the role of Treasurer of the BUET Zonal Committee. Over the following two years, until my official resignation on February 27, 2026, my university journey became inextricably linked with the heartbeat of this organization.

What We Accomplished in These Two Years

Behind every statistic in voluntary blood donation is a human heartbeat: an accident victim revived, a thalassemia warrior given another month of life, a mother surviving emergency postpartum hemorrhage, or a child undergoing heart surgery. Between July 2023 and February 2025, our collective efforts yielded numbers that we hold with deep gratitude and humility:

  • 1,279 Bags of Blood Collected: Through regular donation drives, emergency dispatch calls, and student mobilization across BUET from July 2023 to February 2025.
  • ~760 Bags During Core Leadership Tenure: Together with our dedicated volunteers and core unit teams, approximately 760 bags of blood were gathered directly from donors across the BUET community under our direct coordination.
  • BDT 300,000 (Approx. $2,500 USD) Disaster Relief Fund: Mobilized through rapid crowd-sourcing from our generous alumni network and university students to support families during national flood and disaster crises.
  • Dormitory-to-Dormitory Awareness Campaigns: Organized comprehensive blood grouping camps, awareness workshops, and voluntary donation drives across all student residential halls (dormitories) as well as centrally on the BUET campus.

Engineering Meets Humanitarian Logistics

Managing the treasury and operations of BADHAN BUET Zone required solving non-trivial optimization and coordination problems. Whenever our zonal team ran campus-wide grouping campaigns, hundreds of new student records were generated on paper cards. Entering them manually into the central web portal created an administrative bottleneck where volunteers spent late hours transcribing records by hand.

To eliminate this friction, I developed an automated data-ingestion pipeline using Python, Pandas, and Selenium WebDriver (Pull Request #86). By automating the validation and batch ingestion of donor contacts, hall allocations, and blood groups, we turned hours of administrative manual entry into a 5-minute automated script, ensuring newly identified donors were immediately reachable during hospital emergencies.

The Unspoken Struggles: Rare Negative Groups and Urgent Calls

While the numbers tell a story of resilience, leadership in a voluntary blood organization also brings you face-to-face with heartbreaking systemic constraints.

As the data above illustrates, only 6.6% of our collections were Rh-negative blood (just 85 bags across two years: 34 O-, 23 B-, 15 A-, and 13 AB-). Yet the demand for rare negative groups was relentlessly high. When an emergency case arrived at Dhaka Medical College Hospital or BSMMU requiring multiple units of O-negative or AB-negative blood on short notice, our team would exhaust every contact list, call dormitories room by room, and reach out across sister chapters in Dhaka.

The suffering endured by patients’ families during negative blood shortages was acute and visceral. Balancing this constant emergency pressure around demanding engineering course loads, midterms, lab finals, and 2:00 AM hospital visits took an immense toll on our volunteers.

"Scheduling around classes, exams, and late-night emergencies was tough, and we couldn't meet every urgent need. For any shortfall and the suffering it caused, I take full responsibility and offer my sincere apologies."

Gratitude and the Power of Teamwork

No single person drives BADHAN; it relies on dedicated volunteers working together behind the scenes. I want to express my deepest, heartfelt gratitude to my brother and fellow zonal leader, S. M. Asif Kowser Tonmoy (President, 2024–2025). As President and Treasurer, we spent countless midnight hours deliberating emergency allocations, balancing financial audits, handling logistics, and weathering the intense storm of campus responsibility. His leadership, calm composure, and unwavering resolve anchored our entire team through thick and thin.

I am equally grateful to my entire executive team, the unit conveners, our alumni who backed our disaster relief funds without hesitation, and above all, every student who rolled up their sleeve to give a piece of themselves to save a stranger. Every single bag represents lives touched, families supported, and hope restored.

Passing the Torch: February 2026

In late February 2026, our zone formally announced the new Executive Zonal Committee of BADHAN, BUET Zone. Seeing the next batch of passionate volunteers step into leadership fills me with pride and reassurance.

With their appointment, my formal tenure came to a close, and I resigned on February 27, 2026. Stepping down as Treasurer and Executive Member is bittersweet, but it is the natural rhythm of campus leadership. While my formal executive duties have ended, my commitment to voluntary blood donation and the spirit of BADHAN remains a lifelong pledge.

To the incoming committee: lead with empathy, protect every donor, embrace data and technology to scale your reach, and never forget that what you do is sacred work.
