Crafting the BNWP WikiConnect Theme for the Bengali Wikimedia Community

How I designed and engineered a custom, responsive, Bengali-first WordPress theme to connect Wikipedia editors and showcase open knowledge initiatives.

BNWP WikiConnect WordPress Theme

Bengali Wikipedia is one of the most vibrant volunteer communities in the Indic language space. As the movement expanded through regional edit-a-thons, photography contests, and institutional partnerships, contributors needed a modern, unified web portal to document their progress, publish announcements, and onboard new volunteer editors.

To meet these community needs, I designed and developed the BNWP WikiConnect WordPress Theme, a lightweight, customized theme engineered specifically for bilingual, Bengali-first content presentation and community project management.

Design Philosophy & Bengali Typography

Rendering complex Indic scripts on the web presents distinct typographic hurdles. Inconsistent font fallback stacks often cause broken conjoints or misaligned line heights.

In the BNWP WikiConnect Theme, typography was treated as a first-class design system. The theme integrates optimized web fonts (Hind Siliguri and Noto Sans Bengali) with carefully calibrated line-height ratios and letter-spacing rules, ensuring sharp readability across both mobile viewports and desktop screens.

Technical Architecture & Theme Features

  • Bilingual Architecture: Clean language-switching toggles for Bengali and English visitors with localized navigation and typography.
  • Custom Post Types (CPTs): Purpose-built content models for Community Projects, Outreach Events, and Contributor Profiles.
  • Responsive Bootstrap Framework: Clean grid layout ensuring snappy performance, minimal JavaScript overhead, and full accessibility compliance.
  • Modular Widget Areas: Dynamic widget zones on the homepage allowing non-technical community administrators to easily update featured edit-a-thons, photo banners, and call-to-actions.

Open Source & Community Impact

The theme provides a fast, polished, and maintainable digital presence for the Bangla WikiConnect initiative, empowering organizers to focus on expanding free knowledge rather than troubleshooting website styling.
