Designing an IoT-Enabled Web Platform for Manufacturing Telemetry

How I built a full-stack telemetry and process monitoring portal connecting embedded sensor nodes to an interactive web dashboard for smart manufacturing.

IoT Web Platform Dashboard

In manufacturing laboratories and production workshops, equipment operates across complex parameters (temperatures, load thresholds, vibration levels, and cycle times). However, extracting real-time insights often requires engineers to walk machine to machine, writing down readings on physical clipboards.

I developed the IoT-Enabled Web Platform to bridge this gap: providing a lightweight, robust telemetry portal that connects microcontroller sensor nodes directly to a central dashboard with real-time graphs, anomaly alerts, and structured audit logs.

End-to-End System Architecture

The architecture follows a streamlined three-tier design:

  • Edge Hardware Tier: ESP32 and Arduino microcontrollers equipped with load cells, temperature sensors, and encoders, sampling data and transmitting JSON payloads over HTTP POST requests.
  • API & Ingestion Tier (PHP/MySQL): Lightweight REST endpoints validating incoming token headers, sanitizing parameters, and inserting time-series records into optimized relational tables.
  • Visualization Dashboard (JS / HTML / CSS): Interactive client-side portal utilizing asynchronous polling and dynamic chart rendering to display real-time sensor streams without full-page reloads.

Key Capabilities & Features

  • Multi-Sensor Live Gauges: Real-time visualization of process variables such as unit weights, operating temperatures, and production cycle run-rates.
  • Out-of-Tolerance Alerting: Automated visual flag triggers whenever monitored parameters breach predefined upper/lower control limits.
  • Historical Trend Analysis: Filterable historical query engine allowing engineers to analyze shift-wise variations and export raw production logs to CSV.
  • Low-Bandwidth Optimization: Optimized JSON payload structures and compressed HTTP headers enabling reliable transmission over lossy industrial Wi-Fi networks.

Practical Engineering Insights

Deploying IoT in industrial and academic workshop environments highlighted the critical need for edge-side fault tolerance. The microcontrollers incorporate local flash buffer queues so that if network connectivity temporarily drops, sensor readings are cached locally and synchronized once the connection is restored.
